UCF PROJECTSUCF wants to support projects that make an effective difference to both protecting the fauna and flora, and ensuring that Uganda's rural communities gain and not lose from the presence of wildlife. UCF believes that Uganda's wildlife can and will recover but that it should not be at the expense of the Ugandan communities. We recognise that Uganda's people, institutions, organisations, as well as the private sector can only have success in conservation if they all work together. Where and when we can we will approve and support immediate and long-term projects in areas that are not already heavily funded. Projects supported include the following: The goal of the ECP project was to support the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to conserve elephants in Southern Queen Elizabeth National Park by providing management orientated research information on the ecology of the elephants and identify potential threats to their future. Bukorwe Ridge Elephant TrenchFollowing on from the Elephants, Crops and People Project UCF is pleased to support a joint Uganda Wildlife Authority / Community initiative to dig a 20 km trench along the Bukorwe escarpment in the Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area (QECA). The installation of ranger boat stations at strategic points and the use of boats throughout the area will have an enormous impact on the ability of law enforcement to reverse poaching problems. This will be achieved through facilitating water borne law enforcement (anti poaching measures, policing of the bush meat trade, ivory tracking and illegal fishing), in addition to providing a research and a community / tourism related water safety and rescue capability. UCF has partnered with National Lake Rescue Institution and Uganda Wildlife Authority to provide the first of what is hoped will be a series of fully equipped boat stations to help this fight. Sustainable Vermin Control: Hoima and Masindi Districts of UgandaCrop raiding by wildlife continues to be the biggest source of conflict between rural communities and protected areas. The vermin control project being implemented in Hoima and Masindi Districts is aiming at reducing incidences of human-wildlife conflicts through the identification and establishment of effective problem animal control methods. To find out more about the project please click here... The Kitomi Snare Removal ProjectThe continuing poaching in Uganda is affecting many animals, in particular Chimpanzees and elephants. The Kitomi Snare Removal Project aims to clear snares from the Kitomi area whilst recording and reporting evidence of other illegal activities.
