Pygmy Nile crocodile species in Kidepo
Ugandan researchers conducting population surveys in the Kidepo Valley National Park have found new areas that contain one of the least known crocodilians in Africa - the pygmy Nile crocodile. The species - discovered in 2011 to be distinct from the larger Nile crocodile - is native to West Africa with an isolated population in Uganda that was confirmed only in 2009. Its conservation status is not yet known, but studies on the reptiles in Kidepo will help to further knowledge of the species.
