Jerry Burley -  Chair of the Board of Directors

Jerry is a dual national, Ugandan-British citizen who has lived in Uganda for 30 years.  A regular on the UCU Board of Directors over the years, including as a former Chair, he is often found in the remoter areas of Uganda where he has worked in the oil and gas and mineral exploration industries, as well as directly for conservation. Jerry thus brings a broad experience, coupled with a pragmatic attitude to the alternate needs of industry and conservation, believing that with care and a transparent, combined approach that involves all stakeholders, both can be satisfactorily achieved. Jerry ran the annual Murchison Falls fishing tournament - one of the world's great inshore fishing destinations - for many years and is still an official of it. The competition has supported UWA with over $400,000 worth of park fees and donated a patrol boat, six motor cycles, school programmes and towards the construction of Semanya Marine Ranger Post.

A small but very important team is in place in Uganda to look after the operational requirements. The office team is employed by Uganda Conservation (U) Ltd., UCF's not-for-profit company registered in Uganda, and currently comprises five members of staff.


Maz Robertson - Projects Coordinator & acting General Manager.

Maz joined UCU in July 2016 to take on the management of a growing portfolio of projects and staff. Maz holds an MA in International Development and has worked on conservation and development projects with communities neighbouring conservation areas in Uganda since 2011. She has previously worked on environmental projects in Kenya and Indonesia and brings experience in community development, project management and monitoring and evaluation to the team.

Patrick Agaba - Project Manager.

Patrick joined UCU in 2006 and is very much the public face of UCF in the bush! He is responsible for project management, implementation and stakeholder relationships, predominantly with UWA representatives (at head office and in the field) and community consultation. He has a BA from Makere University and previously has worked in conservation projects for USAid contracted companies. He has a wide knowledge of his country and is fluent in many Ugandan languages.

Shivan Kamugisha - Project Manager.

Shivan joined UCU in July 2017 as a Projects Manager. With over 8 years’ experience in the private sector, Shivan holds a MSc degree in Eco-hydrology and a BSc degree in environmental sciences. She developed her passion for conservation whilst interning in Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, and studying the reduction of human-wildlife conflict for her undergradraduate thesis. She brings to the team great experience in project management and monitoring and evaluation.

Derek Lubangakene - Marketing & Fundraising Manager.

Derek joined UCU in September 2017 to take on fundraising, marketing and communications. A graduate of Procurement & Supply Chain Management, Derek started out in the non-profit world before making the switch to corporate brand marketing, where he has steadily worked for the last five years. He brings to the team a wealth of experience in fundraising, events management, communications, marketing strategy and brand management.

Martin Ssesanga - Finance & Administration Officer.

Martin joined UCU on 15th February 2016. A graduate of B.Com Accounting and formerly an Auditor with Jimroberts & Associates CPA for over 3 year. During his tenure at Jimroberts CPA he participated in various audit assignment among which to mention Uganda Wildlife Authority our key partner was involved.
He brings a wealth of experience in Accounting, Auditing, Systems review and Taxation to our growing profession UCF team.
He is currently pursuing a professional course from ACCA at Level 2.
