For 23 years, Uganda Conservation Foundation has worked alongside the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Government of Uganda to strengthen the foundations of effective protected-area and landscape management.
UWA is mandated to manage Uganda’s wildlife and protected areas. Our role is to help them succeed.
At the heart of our approach are people. We have seen what Uganda’s frontline rangers, staff and support professionals can achieve when they have the training, equipment, opportunity, leadership and support to perform at their best. Behind them must be strong systems, professional management and effective leadership.

Start with what is needed
Our work is demand driven.
We start with the specific management problem and the priorities of the people responsible for the landscape, not with a project or donor opportunity.
What is needed? What will make the greatest difference? Who is best placed to help? And what will remain afterwards?
UWA and the communities surrounding protected areas are our primary stakeholders. They live with the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges of conservation every day. Critically, they will still be there when individual projects, grants and NGOs have gone.
We therefore encourage and involve people in identifying problems, developing solutions, taking responsibility and learning together.

Think beyond conservation
Managing protected areas and landscapes requires more than just conservationists. It requires professionals, rangers, engineers, veterinarians, ecologists, technologists, researchers, tourism specialists, educators, community practitioners and business managers working together.
Conservation is also an enabler of development. Well-managed landscapes protect natural resources, support tourism and investment, create jobs and enterprise, strengthen communities and contribute to Uganda’s national development priorities.
Managing protected areas and landscapes requires more than just conservationists. It requires professionals, rangers, engineers, veterinarians, ecologists, technologists, researchers, tourism specialists, educators, community practitioners and business managers working together.
Conservation is also an enabler of development. Well-managed landscapes protect natural resources, support tourism and investment, create jobs and enterprise, strengthen communities and contribute to Uganda’s national development priorities.
Act with purpose
Equipment without people, maintenance and management is not capacity. Technology without action achieves little.
Information is only as useful as its use.
We turn field experience and information into decisions, decisions into action, and results into learning and adaptation, continually improving and sustaining the effort.
Uganda has able young professionals in many fields. They deserve opportunities to develop, take responsibility, achieve, lead and be recognised for their achievements.
We reinforce the values that strong institutions depend upon: integrity, hard work, discipline, professionalism, accountability, respect, trust, and teamwork.

UCF does not seek to manage Uganda’s protected areas. That mandate belongs to UWA.
Our purpose is to work alongside UWA, park adjacent communities and partners to strengthen their ability to manage, recover and realise the potential of Uganda’s extraordinary wildlife and landscapes.
